Due to pressing business obligations, Scott Buehler has submitted his resignation as President. of the:"Finger Lakes Chapter effective October 28, 1998. Roger Townsend, FLC's First Vice President; has become Acting President until a new President is elected at the 1999 meeting.
That meeting will
be a very important one for FLC with a number of essential issues to be
decided. Those present will be asked to vote on the adoption of a new Chapter
Constitution and a new set of By-Laws both of which appear on the in sert
included in this issue. Adoption of these two documents will give the Chapter
an official set of guidelines under which to operate for the first time
in many years.
The original FLC
Constitution, drawn up by FLC member, John
McGreivey, has
long been lost. The new Chapter Constitution has been modeled aftter the
ACBS Constitution recently adopted by the Society`s Board of Directors.
The proposed chapter by-laws have been similarly modeled after those expected
to be adoptd by the ACBS Board of Directors at their winter meeting in
February 1999
Adoption of these
two documents wilI1 provide the basis on which the Chapter can. proceed
towards
incorporation in
the State of New York and registraionwith the Internal Revenue Service
as a not-for-profit organization. Now that the Chapter has grown to
memberships and annually realizes a significant cash flow through its treasury,
it is important that the Chapter do this. Adoption also means that the
Chapter will have an officially elected Board of Directors as its governing
body for the first time in a long time. Candidates for the FLC Board of
Directors under the new Constitution are shown in the above inset. For
Chapter members who will be unable to attend the Annual Meeting, an absentee
ballot is included with this copy of Brightwork. Based on
the concept of one vote per charter member as defined in article II of
the by laws
The annual meeting will get under way at the The Sherwood Inn, 26 West Genesee Street in Skaneateles New York with a cash bar from 5:30 to 7:00pm. A three entree buffet with the same outstanding menu as last year <stuffed breast of chicken~pasta primavera top round of beef> will follow.
A short meeting
will follow dinner with the principal items of business covering the items
up for for decision as outlined earlier in this article.
Annoucements will
also cover naming of the Chater's Directors at Large, the1999 Boat Show
Sponsor, plans for the 1999 Boat Show Poster, plans for the Chapter to
give something back to the village of Skaneateles, a new People' Choice
Award and the awarding of the 1998 Presiden Cup.
The Chapter- Silent
Auction will run throughout the evening with results to be announced after
the Business
Meeting.., The Silent
Auction is a major fund raiser for the Chapter and you are urged to continue
to give it your strong support with donations that you don't need, but
are probably just what a fellow wooden boater is looking for. Bring lots,
bid often and have some fun! Dinner cost is $25./person, tax & gratuities
included
(the same as last
year), and reservations are required. Please call Shirley
Marsden as
soon as possible at 315-253-7505 (Eves) or 315-252-9506 (Days), but not
later than Monday, January 18th, with your
reservations. Checks,
made out to the Finger Lakes Chapter,ACBS, can be sent beforehand to Shirley
at 67 l/2 East
Genesee St., Auburn, NY 13021.

the boat shows, interviews with members and sights around the Finger Lakes.
The video is 30 minutes long and is a great representation of where
the club came from and where it is going to in the future. A must for anyone's
antique boat documentation library.
Copies of the video
cost $10 each with a $5 handling charge.

Central
New York Winter Boat Show
ANTIQUE BOA T
SHOW WILL BE A MAJOR attraction
at the 1999 Central New York Winter Boat Show at the NYS Fairgrounds in
Syracuse. In 1998 the woodies helped draw some 20,000 visitors to the event.
In 1999 the show
will run fromWed., Feb. 17th to Sun., Feb. 2 1st. Wooden boats will again
be provided by the Antique Boat Museum and FLC members are invited to help
set-up, staff and tear-down the dis play. Last year's participation by
FLC was very successful, attracting several new members to the Chapter,
and volunteers had a busy time handling visitors' curiosity about the antique
boats on display and wooden boats in general.
Arnie Rubenstein
is
again coordinating arrangements with the ABM and the CNY Show. If you can
volunteer some time, please give Arnie a call at 315-637-8522.

Roots
Moving To Minnesota
LATER THIS MONTH
FLC WILL BE LOSING A family that has long been a loyal supporter of the
Chapter
Bill
Root has accepted a new position with
his firm, Pillsbury, Inc., and that means a move to company headquarters
in Minneapolis, MN. Bill and Kathy joined FLC in 1991 and have been actively
involved in the Chapter since then. For the last several years Bill has
been responsible for organizing the Chapter's annual winter workshop. His
whole family's involvement in doing a superb job handling launch and reloading
operations for the Boat Show has set the standard for how it should be
done. And on top of all that, Kathy found time each year to lend
a hand with the Ship's Store. It will be hard to get along without the
Roots and they will be very much missed. We wish them the very best in
their new home near the St. Croix River. Minnesota is the center of a flourishing
antique boating area and we're confident that they will find many new friends
in the Bob Speltz Land-O Lakes Chapter of ACBS. But we still hope they'll
come back to Skaneateles and upstate New York whenever they can. Thanks,
Bill & Kathy, and happy boating in the Land of Lakes.

Susan
Buehler Wins Mary Herwig Award
I N 1995 THE MANOTICK
CLASSIC BOAT Club very generously underwrote the creation of an
ACBS award in memory of one of their members, Mary Herwig. Mary
was a dynamo of energy in both the Manotick Chapter and ACBS operations,
becoming Vice President of the Society in 1993. In1994, she declined
the nomination for the ACBS presidency because of declining health, and
in 1995 she subcumbed to cancer. Knowing that she would have been
an extraordinary President, the ACBS Board of Directors voted to make her
an Honorary ACBS President for I995.
The Mary Herwig
Award is given to honor an individual who has broadly enhanced and furthered
the aims of antique and classic boating and ACBS at the chapter level.
Nominees are submitted by chapter presidents and the selection of a recipient
is made by the ACBS Awards Committee. The 1998 recipient is Susan
Buehler who
was recognized for her many years of involvement in the Finger Lakes Chapter
and ACBS. Susan served as FLC President from 1988 to 1991 and was largely
responsible for moving the Chapter's Annual Boat Show to Oswego in 1991,
and then to Skaneateles in 1995. In 1996 she served as Secretary of ACBS.
Congratulations,
Susan, on receiving this award.

ACBS
And Its Chapters
BY
DEAN GUY , ACBS DIRECTOR-AT LARGE & CHAIR CHAPTER RELATIONS COMMITTEE
THE NATURE OF OUR
VOLUNTEER ORGANIZATION is that the leadership changes annually at both
the chapter and international levels. One of the problems attendant with
this constant change is that information communicated by both groups is
many times lost in the process of transition. ACBS is a federation
made up of its chapters. Because we have a headquarters and an Administrative
Manager, we are able to maintain much-needed continuity. The chief purpose
of the international organization is to be of service to the chapters and
individual members. Although we may not have done a good job of communicating
this fact recently, each Chapter President is a member of the ACBS Board
of Directors. To quote from The ACBS Constitution: "The governing body
of the Society shall be the Board of Directors, comprised of all Officers,
15 Directors, the Immediate Past President of the Society and the Presidents
of the Society's chapters." Many chapters have taken great pains to send
a member to ACBS quarterly Board Meetings and Annual Membership Meetings
with a voting proxy whenever their president is unable to attend.
All members of ACBS are also invited to attend the Society's quarterly
Board of Directors Meetings and Annual Membership Meetings. Why not plan
to attend a Board Meeting and gain a first-hand acquaintance with the activities
going on in our organization?

The Finger Lakes
Chapter has grown substantially over the last few years and is now closing
in on the 200 membership mark. And that growth is good. It provides a strong
base on which the Chapter can operate, plan and build for the future. But
with growth, there inevitably is more to be done, which means there is
an on-going need for more mem bers to get involved in Chapter operations.
And there is a need to identify those who will lead the Chapter in the
future. If you are interested in participating more fully in Chapter operations,
please let Roger Townsend know. You'll be glad you did!
Many thanks to Doug
Vittum who put together the recap of the Fall Outing to Lake Winnipesaukee.
The story of that most enjoyable weekend will be completed in the March
99 issue.
Thanks again to
Morley Smith for his article on finding an old race boat. But what do you
think of his
article? Does anything
about it leave you wondering? There are some characters named Bowgus, Big
Bang Boris and Hoccus. Did Morley make up these names because he couldn't
remember the real names of the characters he encountered, or is there more
to it than meets the eye? If you confront Morley with these
questions, you're likely
to get a drawn look with a twinkle in the eye that leaves you just as uncertain
afterward as you were before!
Thanks for the many
compliments about the September issue of this newsletter. A last
minute change in where the color printing was done, the machine it was
done on and the weight of the paper used, all contributed to a finished
product that was better than originally expected. But the cost of color
remains prohibitive for regular use. Next year we'll plan to try it again.
I guess it's appropriate
to mention that yours truly was awarded the ACBS President`s Cup by outgoing
ACBS President, Tom Flood, for ongoing efforts as a Director of
ACBS. Many thanks, Tom, for that expression of appreciation.

1998
Fall Outing
December 1998
BY DOUG VITTUM
THIS
YEAR'S FALL OUTING WAS TO L AKE Winnipesaukee, NH. Obviously an Indian
name, there Are two translations that most frequently appear:"Smile of
the Great Spirit" and "Beautiful Water in a High Place." Once on the lake,
you'll agree that either translation is appropriate.Formed by glaciers,
Winnipesaukee is about 25 miles long and twelve miles wide with 164 miles
of shoreline, 72 square miles of surface water and 274 "inhabitable" islands.
Depth ranges up to 200 ft. The number of boats on the trip varied from
day to day,
but all told there were 16 wooden boats and 64 people. Our base of operations
was Sandy Point Beach Resort, located near the southwest end of Alton Bay
at the most southerly reach of the lake. Providing the best dockage we've
ever had, quiet rooms and a great restaurant, you couldn't ask for more. |

ON SEPTEMBER 26TH,
FIVE BOATS FROM THE Finger Lakes Chapter launched
at the Midway Marina in Weedsport, NY to begin a leisurely cruise down
the Seneca River to Baldwinsville.
First
in the water was Allan Breese's 1952 Hutchinson piloted by Allan's parents,
Haq & Winnie Breese, and Allan's brother, Don, who were filling in
while Allan attended his daughter's soccer match. Next to launch was Roger
Townsend's 1953 Holiday followed by Jeff Williams' 1959 Century with daughter,
Michelle, as naviga
tor.
Next down the ramp was Ed Ritter's 1956 Century Resorter with Matt Sherrill's
1956 Capri close behind.
At
10:3Oam we were underway and as we approached Cross Lake, we were joined
by Doug & Nancy Persse in their 1941 Garwood Vacationer.
As
we continued on toward the Lock 24 Restaurant under balmy 70+ degree weather,
everyone noticed the number of large trees uprooted by the Labor Day storm
and the great variety of birds sighted, including an osprey. After scaling
the six foot high bulk head at Lock 24 and tying up the boats, everyone
enjoyed the good food and beverages at the restaurant, (compliments of
the Chapter) and the camaraderie of the group which had grown to twelve
with the arrival of Deanne Townsend and Allan Breese who had returned from
the soccer wars. The return cruise featured a brief shower and a full throttle
run around Cross Lake. By 4:30 everyone was out of the water and on their
way home after a day spent doing what is more fun than anything else;

We
are researching a 1905 28' Lozier launch, that was owned
by The Lake George Association and used as a buoy tender on Lake George
New York USA..We understand that the vessel was donated to the Clayton
Antique Boat Museum where it was purchased by our family in 1985. We are
currently in process of restoring this boat and would appreciate any photo's
and historical information you can make available to us. :r.

We are researching
this sailing skiff that we recently acquire from the Lake George
region of New York State...
She is 17' long.48''beam, double ended sailboat with a leaded drop keel...There
is a 3 stepped mast forward and 1 mast in the stern deck (bowdish
style)...There are two sets of oar locks that are fastened with square
headed screws which leads us to believe that the boat was built in Canada...The
decking looks to be mahogany strips much like the early disappearing
propeller boats or as they are better known as dispro's/ I understand
that Peterborough also used this style of decking as well as
other boat builders of this area...The hull looks to be cedar with a oak
coaming and possibly a fir floor... The rudder is set-up with
a line that runs along the deck which allows for steerage from any
position in the boat... The hardware is all brass and looks to be correct....We
have not found any makers tags or builders marking..any help in determining
the age or maker would help us
greatly in the restoration process.. email
